Hi Pete,
	I also have a HP 8601A which was working OK a few wks ago when I used 
it.  I hope it continues, as at the moment it's the only RF sig. gen I 
have that is working.
	Anyhow, I googled HP 8601A and came up with this thread:

	It doesn't fully answer the question asked there "HP 8601A issue won't 
tune below 1.2Mhz"  but does offer some good suggestions.  Mostly it 
says to clean everything thoroughly.

The 11 RANGE on  the  8601A will not  output RF below   about 1.3MHz....
It  ill not  output  0.1MHz when  FREQUENCY dialed to  1. Frequency
commences  at  around   a 1.3  MHz  setting of the  control.
THE output is  OK  and  correct  when  the  RANGE switched to 110.  The
adjustments   5-11 in the manual produce no change when trying to set  the
0.1MHz setting.
