I have had many nice AM QSOs, out to 1500 miles, with a barefoot Johnson Ranger.
Of course, a good antenna helps.
I was building a new AM broadcast transmitter site in 1990, and used one of the 215 foot, series-fed, towers with a new ground radial system consisting of about 7 miles of buried number 10 soft-drawn copper wire. The transmission line was 240 feet of 7/8 inch Heliax. The center conductor of the Heliax was connected directly to the tower and I matched the impedance inside the new transmitter building. Reminiscing and grinning here.

Whether or not to use the Ranger on 160 depends on your definition of
"local". To me, local is anywhere within the range of a "day trip".
Using the Interstate Highway system that is about 300 miles...
