I "fix" at least 90% of "screwy" problems in equipment by tightening all the machine screws and nuts that go through the chassis, replacing rivets with machine screws, and so forth.

Remember, in most equipment all the grounds are made through these fasteners.

If you have a piece of gear that's vintage with chassis mountings done
via rivets, and the equipment behaves oddly with flaky or intermittent
problems, chances are all that will go away if a rivet on each chassis
mount is replaced with a nut, bolt, and star washer cranked down good
and tight.
