Hi Brian, VE3VAW,
I'm lucky that your Valiant is open and waiting for parts.
Your description of how your band switch stops at 160m made me understand
the problem with mine.
Let me quote from the bama construction manual the part Id's.
D1 cam rides on the 160-11m band switch and is distinguished by its two
pegs.
D2 cam switches the VFO between 11m, 40m and 80/160m and has two parallel
groves.

Your D1 cam operates correctly by touching the chassis and stops the band
switch dead when you try to go passed the 160m band detent .

My D1 cam swings by the chassis by a 1mm gap and can go another 3 detents.
There is no chassis scoring to think the my cam ever did stop the switch at
160m.

Since it was factory wired, and there is no adjustment, I believe the
problem always existed.

As a cure, I think a properly placed self tapping screw on the chassis will
block the cam rotation beyond 160m ?

I am also in the process of restoring the Valiant with new electrolytic and
paper caps. A few of the carbon resistors need replacement too.
