One thing I attribute to eBay but perhaps all the on-line venues
contribute to this, is that it seems like all the nice stuff that used
to show up at hamfests is gone to the on-line world. If you find a
Viking 1 or any other rig at a hamfest, it will be a basket case.
Ditto for receivers. Folks with nice clean unhacked gear seem to
reserve them for on-line. It gets kind of depressing to go to
hamfests and only see the parts rig junk, the capacitors, inductors,
transformers etc. that have been left outside for years, or sitting in
a wet basement or barn. The audio iron has vanished from hamfests.
Paypal has been a nightmare for me. I had to get new credit cards and
I had a PayPal credit card because at one time, eBay pretty much
forced everyone to either use a PayPal credit card with PayPal, or
allow PayPal to use your checking bank account. I'm not about to
allow PayPal to access my bank account so I got a PayPal credit card,
but it stuck in my craw.
When the new replacement PayPal card came, the front was blank. There
were no embossed numbers on it, no account number, no exp. date,
nothing. All that was printed on the back with dark blue print on a
lighter blue background, so the only way you could read it was with
reading glasses and a bright flashlight. I thought that was the most
stupid !@#$ed up thing I'd ever seen.
I went through all the hoops to log into PayPal to remove the old card
and put in the new one. I tried dozens of times on several separate
occasions before giving up. I could never get PayPal to ACCEPT THEIR
OWN CREDIT CARD!! I got the run around on the phone and eventually
just cancelled the card and threw it away.
EBay is going to a new payment method in a year or two, some company
in the Netherlands, but I don't care as I never look at eBay now, and
don't need anything. Hamfests are the way to go for me now, because
what I'm looking for is so odd and out there (grid clips and such) or
basic like wire and solder, that I usually can get by with hamfest
finds.
