Scott,

You may remember the name Rick Campbell KK7B from various QST and ARRL 
publications, he's done a lot to keep phasing alive during the interim 
between tubes and SDRs.     I mention him because his designs use modern 
circuitry to develop the 90 degree phase difference in hardware, and the 
same filters could be used with a tube-type exciter much as Mike did.

Not to dissuade you from old-school techniques, but Wes and Joe were the 
first to realize that their designs were limited  by the stability of 
the components available at the time.   It was good enough "then" but a 
modern day approach is worth considering today.
