I think the Viking 500 and Gobe King 500 both originally used a single
4-250 modulated by 811As. Those were multi-band rigs, but you could
look at one and ignore the bandswitching aspect.
I would also get out all your ARRL and Bill Orr handbooks from the
1950s and go through them looking for that design. It sounds like
something from a West Coast handbook or QST article.
