[Boatanchors] Germanium Transistor Noise??

I'm working on an old Sonar DF-6X Marine Direction
Finder.
It's full of Germanium transistors.
Got it playing, but it has a very high noise
floor.
High enough to drown most Beacon Band and Marine
Band sigs.

I know Germaniums can age and get "leaky."  
Before I break out the scope- has anyone heard
anything
about old germaniums generating a lot of noise?
