Hi David,

I have used SDR gear designed for the baseband (audio/sound card)
methods and connected the output from BC-453 and RAK radios (not
simultaneous) and I got good results. The "real" radios were taking the
heat from the antenna end and the SDR software provided far superior
filtering and very fine tuning that those great radios don't have. The
BC-453 / SDR combination showed the most dramatic improvements as you
might expect. The RAK has built-in filtering that outperforms the
command receivers by far. Most list members probably already know that.
The RAK also has much slower tuning - takes a lot of turns to go a short
way up n down the spectrum. the HF command receivers tune far too fast.
Too fast or too slow is a personal preference:)

The SDR software has built-in DSP (digital signal processing) but is
superior to several stand alone DSP solutions (no SDR quad signals) I
have tried. Even those give a large performance boost. Most of them,
with and without SDR, have noticeable "latency" if you are using them
with a transmitter. Full QSK is not going to be possible. If you are a
"phony" that won't matter. If you already have a computer with a sound
card it will cost nothing, zero, nada, zilch to play with it. And no
modifications to the radios.
