In the late 1980s, I bought a 1960s vintage Mosley TA-36. The feed struck me as rather odd, with two pieces of paralleled coax. One half of the driven element was grounded to the boom.
The original feed was in tough shape and I had no documentation for it. I removed the strap that grounded half of the driven element. I attached a Walt Maxwell, W2DU balun to the boom. The balun performs the transition from the unbalanced coax to the balanced driven element.
This old tribander has really performed. I would not have DXCC #1 honor roll without it.

“However, I wonder if using a good quality 1:1 balun while ungrounding the "cold" side of the driven element would be a good thing, bad thing, or not matter. I suspect weather-proofing would be easier using a sealed balun. Mac, K2GKK/5”
