It’s been a bit more than 50 years, since I built an Eico 720 as a kit, so my memory may not be completely accurate.

As I recall, the cover over the meter face is entirely plastic.  The lower portion, containing the zero adjustment screw, was black and probably painted.  If the transmitter was mine and the meter worked properly, I would be very hesitant to remove the cover.  The plastic cover may have become quite brittle with age and might be easily damaged.  If any of the black had flaked off and it really bugged me, I would consider touching it up with a black Sharpie felt tip pen or some black, model, enamel paint and a fine tipped brush.

The 720 is a great, little transmitter, which was very well designed and used quality parts and construction.  At the time, in its power class, the only transmitter I would have rather had would have been a Johnson Ranger.  The Ranger was well beyond what this 14 year old could afford.

“The one thing - small - is that the lower part of the meter (bottom, around the adjusting screw) seems to have flaked off some of its paint. I think there IS a plastic cover over it... so I guess its just a case of the paint releasing from the metal (paint on bare metal ? paint on primer?
Anyone have ideas on whether it is advisable to paint this area...Brian VE3VAW”
