[Boatanchors] Diode question

I'm working on a Drake T-4XB. Symptom is that
it will only make output in X-CW, nothing in Tune
or SSB or X-AM.

One problem found, which may or may not be the
real problem, is an open diode in the balanced
modulator can.  It is a 1N540, of which, of course,
I have no spares.

Question is: Will a 1N914 or 1N4148
(of which I have plenty be an acceptable substitute?
I realize I may have to replace all 4.

Just wondering if there is something special about
the 1N540 that is needed for balanced modulator service.
