[Boatanchors] more on the Johnson Johnson

Hi Brian,
I didn't save your original post, but think you're referring to a
Ranger. I've been watching the replies, and haven't seen what I've
found (and others) to be the cause of the chirp. The B+ to the VFO is
regulated, but IIRC, the dropping resistor is located inside the VFO
box. It gets hot, and also grows in resistance. The first will induce
drift, the 2nd will produce chirp, as the B+ at the tube will drop under
load. IIRC it takes a 15k 5w "sand" resistor, mounted outside the box
to correct both things. I've done it in Rangers & Valiants. You do
have to get into the box to remove the bad one.
Your test with xtal bears this out.
These rigs sounded just fine when new, but things do age and things get
soft (like all of us).

I appreciate that there is a vintage sound to the CW and that cognoscenti will pick up on it as something not of today per se. Not all that objectionable.
