[Boatanchors] question about EF Johnson Navigator and CW note transmitted

Hi Brian,

This one came through okay:) Congrats on the Ranger.

it won't do to listen to a receiver in local range of the VFO. The
Ranger should have (early ones maybe not) a keyer circuit that delays
application of the VFO signal to the rest of the transmitter. What you
hear when the VFO starts is NOT what a distanr ham hears in his
receiver. I hope that helps.

Make sure all the connection/attachment points are well grounded. It is
possible and most likely to get some feedback from the final into the
VFO. Worst case is on forty meters. Turn the Ranger belly up, loosen,
then retighten all the attaching nuts for that shield plate. It would
good to do that for all of the screws and nuts you can find under
there.. If yours has rivets you're on your own. The factory assembled
Rangers have rivets. The kit Rangers have screws and nuts.

This guy is an ex-Collins tech and does good repair work on his stuff. But he is not a CW guy so would have no real ear I think for what the Ranger would, could or should be like on CW.

I put a xtal in it and the xtal transmitted sound is a little more bell-like than the note xtmitted using the VFO. Not a voltage-sag kind of whoop IMHO, but a noticeable quality difference for Yer Standard CW note.

I also have a EFJ Adventurer that came along quite some time back, from another capable fellow but its been too long to believe the caps should not be looked at before applying juice to it.)

I just want it to be acceptable to those out there who have to copy the signal if I answer them and be willing to answer a CQ from me as well.
