[Boatanchors] RX-42 atop SX-42?

After a long search I finally bought a RX-42 to go with my SX-42 (which remains unrestored).  Maybe now I'll be motivated.....
 
I'd seen photos but surprised at what a beast it is.  Can't wait to hear it.  Questions:  

Is this also a Raymond Loewy design? 
 
Was it intended to be placed atop the receiver?  Thinking that maybe the base is smaller so as to obstruct less ventilation?  Or just a design choice?

 Is it actually a bass-reflex design?  I thought that's an early 60's thing?

Any circuitry I should look at?

BTW: Purchased from National Radio Equipment Sales.  Better condition than I expected and very well packaged.
