Yes a separate PSU for the VFO is always a great idea with any rig!!

The usual failure in the power transformer was a short between windings caused by overheating.
If you look closely in the HG-10 / HG-10B manual, you will see that Heath recommends an external power supply for that VFO even though the DX-60- series has a better power transformer.
