[Boatanchors] WAAAYYY OT Question (repairing vinyl cut)

Sorry about the OT question, but I sorta figure a lot of folks here are
experts in a wide range of subjects.

Today I bought a new wheelchair for wifey, took it out of the box and
started removing the protective plastic from the padded armrests etc
(sort of like Saran wrap taped up).

Well, I slipped with the very sharp pocket knife and put about a 1 1/2
inch cut in the top of the right arm rest.  It's black vinyl with foam
rubber underneath. Since I did it, it's obvious the warranty won't cover
it (and I wouldn't feel right about asking anyway).

QUESTION:  What would be the best way to make a 'permanent' repair?  I
hate to just wrap the armrest of a new chair in black tape.  I
considered using some of that black RTV stuff available at auto parts
stores, but not sure that would be the answer, and once used probably
not undoable.

Ideas anyone?

Thank you.
