I just wanted to follow up on the issue I had with the low heater voltage. As I noted earlier, the problem was a shorted .01 bypass cap on the detector heater. There was some question as to whether that cap was mica, as the manual states, or paper, as is often the case with these older receivers.
I conducted a post-mortem on the caps in question and they are mica. They are 7/8" by 7/8" by 1/8". The tops and bottoms are metal, and the sides show three layers. They are labeled Faradon (Camden, N.J), Model T.
The mounting is interesting. All four bypass caps are stacked. Each has an eyelet in the middle. A tight-fitting screw mounts them to the chassis and they are grounded through that eyelet and screw.
Of the four bypass caps in my receiver, three tested fine and one had a dead short. I replaced all of them.
