First, an R-388 is a 51J3. Apparently, the R-388A is a 51J4. But all that
I have on the R-388A/URR is the conversion instructions from R-388/URR,
which are how to install the three mechanical filters, switch, etc.
I don't have anything that would shed light on the tube complement change.
I have a few copies left of a Collins 520 5014 00 dated 15 August 1954 on
the 51J4 that I made 20+ years ago. But their foldout schematic shows
6BE6's for the Mixers and 6AK5 for the RF. If you want to fool with it, I
could send you a copy of the schematic and you can check the component
values around the mixers and RF amp. If different, I can edit the schematic
and print the edited version. I guess that we would need to try to figure
out what to call it.

Subject: [Boatanchors] 51J4 schematic
. I picked up a clean 51J4 that I rebuilt for myself and it is working
fine. I would like to find the correct schematic for it. It is using 6BA7s
for the mixers rather than 6BE6s and a 6BZ6 for the RF amp instead of the
6AK5. The correct tube numbers are marked on the chassis. I checked with
Howard and he said he never saw an R-388 or 51J4 like mine. The only 6ba7s
that I have seen have been in a 75A3. Any ideas?
