For applications not involving red-hot heating you can use Constantan wire in place of nichrome. Constantan is
a copper-nickel alloy and is easily soldered to. You can get it in the necessary small diameters
in reasonable quantities on Amazon or Ebay. Its used in thermocouples. I've used it for ballasts
in old Atwater-Kent "coffin" radios with great results.

I replaced all the shunts in my Valiant.
They are not resistors...they are lengths of nichrome wire.
You can't solder very well to nichrome so it depends upon the builder
wrapping the wire around the lugs.
You can get good precision resistors from Mouser.
