Fixed it! Many thanks to those who contributed pictures, suggestions, etc.

The problem is that the range selection switch shaft can slide
longitudinally,
causing the gears to bind on another part of the mechanism. This is
prevented
by a cotter pin that limits the amount of slide that the shaft has. If this
wears
then you wind up with the range selector binding.

Reassembled (no matter how careful I am, there is always one extra screw
hole, oh well) and back in service. Excellent piece of gear.
