about the only one I consider good at the museum.project that I can still move is our R388 collins.. have other things that give a good signal but some are even heavier... seemed when I passed the 60 age mark everything felt twice as heavy... ed#

Trying this again. I am on Digest mode so feel free to email direct. Can anyone name 5 receivers in the "General Coverage" class of radio that are as good as the SP-600 but are easier to move, operate, work on. I'm giving up my SP-600 because its just too much weight and change is in order. Unit has to be a tube radio, repairable. Hybrid like Drake okay.

All I can come up with is: R4B or C, HQ-180A, 51S1 .... most of the others that would be suitable if weight were no issue are just too heavy like SX-101A, R274, 51J3 in cab, etc.

Can anyone name 5 ?

Doug, if you could run across a Drake FS-4 synthesizer and yes I know they are scarce
and very pricey, but depends on what ya wanna put into a good receiver. Add a few filters
to the R-4B/C and I would think you would have a nice receiving setup. Add one of the E-tek
readouts and you would have a 'cady-lak' rcvr. Another thought would be a HQ-150 which has
xtal filter plus a Q-Mult...excel. for CW plus AM. The R-388/URR not too much bigger/heavier
than the HQ-180 or HQ-150. Good luck and let us know what you wind up with.

You don't need an FS-4. For about $75 you can build an N3ZI DDS VFO and use
it as you would an FS-4.

Drake 4-Line
51S1

What about the Eldico R102 (with a full rack or rocks) or the Allied AX/SX series?
I dunno. Comparing to a SP600 (and especially the later variants) thins the herd very rapidly...I know there are plenty other GC receivers, but not many with the performance of a late SP600 AND the light weight and size of an R4C...
I have a clean R4C in my pre estate sale.

Here's an oddball tube. "Input" on one end,
"Output" on the other, with tube element
connections between. Anyone familiar? Know how
to hook it up?
