You don't need an FS-4. For about $75 you can build an N3ZI DDS VFO and use
it as you would an FS-4.

Doug, if you could run across a Drake FS-4 synthesizer and yes I know they
are scarce and very pricey, but depends on what ya wanna put into a good
receiver. Add a few filters to the R-4B/C and I would think you would have a
nice receiving setup. Add one of the E-tek readouts and you would have a
'cady-lak' rcvr. Another thought would be a HQ-150 which has xtal filter
plus a Q-Mult...excel. for CW plus AM. The R-388/URR not too much
bigger/heavier than the HQ-180 or HQ-150. Good luck and let us know what you
wind up with.

Trying this again. I am on Digest mode so feel free to email direct. Can
anyone name 5 receivers in the "General Coverage" class of radio that are as
good as the SP-600 but are easier to move, operate, work on. I'm giving up
my SP-600 because its just too much weight and change is in order. Unit has
to be a tube radio, repairable. Hybrid like Drake okay.

All I can come up with is: R4B or C, HQ-180A, 51S1 .... most of the others
that would be suitable if weight were no issue are just too heavy like
SX-101A, R274, 51J3 in cab, etc.

Can anyone name 5 ?
