On the old EF Johnson Navigator transmitter I got years ago, the xtals on it are set into a socket somewhat recessed from the front. Same in the EFJ Ranger I recently got.
What the OM on the Navigator had done was put a longish piece of that old kind of durable white cloth first aid tape on the crystal... wrapped around both sides of the xtal and then it comes together to form a pull-tab. Easy to reach into the round recess and pull the tab on the crystal and out it comes.
Putting it back on both of those EFJ rigs is facilitated here with long nose pliers OR a long hemostat. That sets the pins in the socket and then I just push it in with the ends of the pliers.
Hemostat...great for electronics, parts pick up and placement and for pulling ticks off the dogs.
