[Boatanchors] Dark deposits on rotary switch wafers

Your "Black Crud" is most probably silver oxide (as conductive as 
silver) or silver sulfide.
You should see the latter only if you live near a waste treatment plant 
or other source of sulfides.
Scraping it off, unless you have the skills of a plastic surgeon, will 
also scrape off the silver leaving you with a very unreliable switch.
