Thank you, Dave and Don- outstanding catch!
I know you have it right, because I bought the
estate of Charles Joseph Poth, Jr. (prob a typo
in the callbooks) in Elgin many years ago and
I thought I recognized that call. The recorder
and the wire came from that estate and has been
on my shelf for probably two decades. I've had
very little time to work on anything for the last
couple of months, but I kept seeing this thing
and "got the itch." It took about 30 minutes
to get it going and that's good, because that's
all the time I had for it and still haven't
gotten back to it. I'm about 2 months behind on
a very interesting microphone project with one
of our members and I've got to get back on that.
Ordered parts and misplaced them.... yes, I
digress.
Anyway- to hear Mr. Poth's actual voice is
awesome.
He sounds very much like fellow Texan Lyndon
Johnson.
The QSO recording goes on for about 15 minutes.
Fred's audio isn't nearly as good as "Joe's."
Charles J. Poth was a very interesting man.
He was an Intell officer with the 3rd Battalion,
1st Marines on Guadalcanal (they still had his
Dress uniform, though moth-eaten) and
brought back some interesting "keepsakes," such
as a complete (except for the powder and fuse)
Japanese hand grenade he had hidden inside an
ART-13!
Ask if you want to see it.
Also, a Japanese Navy personal towel (they were
inscribed as such and the had a place for the
user's name) stuffed inside another piece of
gear which his son recognized as having come
from the beach after the Battle of Savo Sound.
I have it vacuum packed to protect it. If it
ever had a name, it washed away. If it were
named,
I would have sent it home to Japan.
Lots of little "bringbacks" like that. Inside a
Japanese mess kit were some original photos
he'd taken on Guadalcanal. I scanned them
and passed them to people whom one would think
would be interested, but didn't hear much.
I gave the photos back to his daughter. I know
I have those scans somewhere, if anyone wants
to see them. Scans in about 1998 aren't as
nice as those we get today. Mr. Poth came
home from the war and took over his father's
Radio and (later) TV business.
Somewhere around here I have some matchbook covers
with his business info on one side and WWII
"pin-up Girls" pictured on the other. Also
had similar as little calendars. I posted scans
of those on one of the Usenet antique radio groups
forever ago. Probably have them on an old
hard drive back in the data crypt. Stil have
about a gazillion tubes I purchased from
that estate.
Thanks again for finding that, Don and Dave.
