Back in the 50s my dad had a wire recorder, he used it to record square
dance sessions, as he played in the band. It looked similar to the one
in Dave's video, but dad's also had a turns counter so he could find
particular songs. There was a shaft and 90 degree gear setup from one of
the reels to the counter, which was resettable to zero. Neat watching
Dave's video seeing the pickup bar going up and down to evenly wind the
wire on the takeup spool. No idea what happened to it, I'm thinking it
went out to the junk pile when tape recorders became more affordable.
Fidelity wasn't great, probably up to maybe 3KC or so, but I don't know
if that was microphone related or a limitation of the wire. Anyone know
what kind of wire was used? Maybe piano wire or similar?
