David,

Sorry for your loss but at least it didn’t result in liability for you from falling in front of a following school bus.

I expect the tailgate latch on many pickups isn’t able to safely withstand the force of a heavy object sliding into it.  You must have done a really fast takeoff at some point or gone up a steep slope.

Sometimes I have put some very heavy stuff in my ¾ ton GMC and I make sure it is restrained because my bigger fear is launching something through the rear window into the cab if I am forced to make an emergency stop because I avoid hard acceleration with heavy objects in the bed.

I have never lost anything out of a pickup but I am paranoid about forgetting to latch the targa top on my Corvette after removing and reinstalling it.  There are a lot of members of the “flying roof club” and I don’t care to join them.  Out of habit every time I get ready to drive I apply upward pressure on the front and rear of the roof to make sure that the latches are engaged.  I have a feeling you will have the same fear/feeling about your pickup in the future.
