[Boatanchors] The Silence of the Bands

The ARRL is in the publishing business and like all other publishing houses
they are scrambling to survive.

The internet, changing tastes and millennial's have turned the industry on
it's ear.

Like others, it is about subscriptions and Ad dollars.

I have to agree with Mark. If you still even occasionally pick up an issue
of QST you can tell the League no longer puts much interest in or emphasis
on technical matters. Compared to years ago, the number of technically
related articles has greatly declined, both for construction and
nonconstruction articles. Oh sure, there's the beginner's corner with a few
technical related items, but overall, it's just not there anymore when it
comes to construction or other technical things. QST used to be about 50-50
when it came to technical and operating oriented articles. They did away
with all the columns that covered contest results. I really like those, not
necessarily for the results, but the accompanying pictures of shacks and
equipment. They did away with the individual columns for things like DX,
YLs, VHF, etc.

Those are all some of the reasons I gave up my membership and QST
subscription. Several times a year I go to the library which has a
subscription and go through back issues, to see if there's anything antenna
related or other construction related things that might find their way into
QST and if I want it, I make a copy.

With the “memorize your way to your license” system we have now, I see no
reason why you can’t be expected to expend a bit more effort and get your
General at the same time as your Technician license. How easy do we have
to make it? Send in a check and a few cereal box tops?

Doesn’t the league boast about little Jane or Johnny going from nothing to
Extra in one sitting? They might not know what end of a hot soldering
iron to pick up on the second try if they got it wrong the first time, but
they’re licensed….. and that’s all the league is interested in.
