Big wattage, high voltage zeners can be a bit tough to find these days. They can be easily substituted with a low wattage, high voltage zener connected with a high voltage transistor. One could use a high voltage NPN horizontal output transistor taken from an old TV set. (The curbside scrounger in me loves this - discared CRT TV sets are super abundant these days).
Put a couple K (exact value not critical) resistor from base to emitter (to soak up leakage current). Ground the emitter. Zener anode goes to base. Zener cathode goes to collector and regulated point in your circuit. Heatsink the transistor as necessary. Works great as a VR tube replacement. Don't forget the power resistor which goes to B+ as is done with a VR tube regulator circuit.
