Every year TARC (Turlock Amateur Radio Club) has been VERY active on
field day, planning it months in advance, having an Ice Cream Social at
the last club meeting before FD (usually about two weeks) to set up who
will work which bands/modes, equipment, food and so forth. That Ice
Cream Social was held last Tuesday and all went well. They usually hold
FD on some private property where there is an Almond Orchard, banks of a
river etc.
Well, today for safety reasons the TARC Officials decided to completely
cancel FD this year and have put the notices out, announcing it on the
repeater during the W6BXN/R repeater ID's, etc. . . It's ALWAYS hot
here in the central valley at the end of June, but they were afraid that
this heat wave that in in the middle of this year might cause some very
severe medical problems, especially for the older members. I don't
think it's EVER been cancelled before. This week the temps have been
near record levels, right now (2:00PM) my outdoor remote thermometer
says it's 108F outside, the "Weather Underground" web site says it's
108.7F here in town.
This really doesn't affect my FD plans, I'd already planned on running
it from home in "Class 1E" ( from home on emergency power). I've done
that for years, can't handle the heat of operating in a tent outside, etc.
