I think those older rigs like the Johnson Challenger and Navigator were often used on 80m and 40m.
When guys would venture onto the higher bands they realized that they might have to put up with sounding a bit more chirpy and drifty!
Yes on 15m and 10m novice bands it was not unusual to hear signals that were far less than T9 !!

Chirp could be caused by poor power supply regulation or the VFO being
keyed. Try a mod. that lets the VFO run all the time when you are in
transmit.
You ought to be able to do fine with 20 watts on CW but I expect band
conditions on 20 m. stink.
I agree that a bit of funky sound, a little drift, some class C choke
input supply ringing on key down etc. let others know you have a real
CW rig and not some modern plastic appliance.
Some ops, OTs maybe are drawn to that sound and a bug for a key. It
means you aren't some faker with a computer. The trick is moderation.
You don't want to sound like a Cuban in the 1970s.
