The guy who replaced him in the 1970s wasn't much nicer. He was funny though.
I remember driving all night to get there for 9 am exams with the XYL taking her general and me taking the Extra. We both passed the code but failed the written tests by ONE question each! We took them 3 months later in Nashville closer to home and passed.
I remember meeting the guy in the coffee shop while we got breakfast He didn't say who he was but he warned us that the "EIC" was real pain. I cracked up when he was the EIC !!
When he came off the elevator upstairs in the FCC Office, he yelled "UP AGAINST THE WALL" at everyone, and ordered us to form a neat single line against the wall. So funny! I got the impression that he was a really great guy when he wasn't playing is tough guy part, but I could be wrong.
The filed testing operation up in Nashville was government run. NO VEs back then. They did a good job but ran it at Nashville Tech and there were a lot of interruptions by insensitive students buzzing in and out, who were NOT supposed to be there. They seemed nothing like the kids I encountered at Southern Polytechnic in GA in my younger years. Very insensitive and noisy. Not well behaved at all. It was 1978.
Anyway, second time was a charm. We both passed. WB4FPH became Extra AF4K, and WN4QBL became General WB4QBL.

I dunno Rob, all I know is he looked like he spent his day beating up on
helpless examinees, then went home and finished on the family or
something..... never saw even a hint of a smile, only a scowl.
