In 1963 I prevailed on a local Ham to give me the novice exam....
On the appointed day he said "are you ready?'
I said "Yes" and promptly failed the CW exam....
He was a good sport and instead of sending the paper back to the FCC marked
"failed"
He loaned me a CW practice record and rescheduled...
I came home from school every day and played that record on my Fathers Hi-fi
In two weeks or so I passed the CW and written exam..

BUT, it did take several visits to Houston street to pass the General CW, so
I had a Tech for several years.

It wasn't until after I got my General (just as the ARRL had privileges
restricted) that I realized, if I wanted to make QSO's with my crappy radio
and antennas, it had to be on CW.....
and became very proficient in that mode....

WN2AWQ back in 1961-2. Novice tests at that time were given by local
hams. You had to hook up with one and ask hm/her to get a Novice test
for you. For the General, had to go into NYC. First trip using all of my
allowance saved up, I failed the code receiving. You couldn't get past
the Grim Reaper in the exam room on Houston St unless you passed!
Repeated it a month later, much better prepared. Didn't want to waste my
allowance again. Kept the upgraded WB call since. No desire to change
it, it's like my name after 55 years.
