ABSOLUTELY AGREED !
I ran into this recently with my camcorder and firewire.
The (relatively) new laptop (two yrs old) doesn't have a firewire port.
Nor is there a port to add one of the adapter cards that used to be common.
So, I kept the old desktop tower (Win XP) and it is now showing signs of
failure.
I suppose I could buy an older laptop with a built in firewire port, or a
new camcorder (and repeat the cycle when the ports "de jour" change again).
Or digitize the the composite video/audio out.
Same feelings on SDR as you - at least my boatanchors (for the most part)
are still repairable and useful.
