[Boatanchors] RAK question

Merry Christmas Joe

I have a RAK/RAL pair and they are the king of regenerative sets. There is a large glass regulator tube in the power supply that was intended for use aboard ships where there was considerable power variance but it isn’t needed for your use. Remove it and store it in a safe place; taking this out greatly reduces heat buildup in your now 70+ year old power supply. The manual covers this regulator tube.

The RAL is a bit more difficult to find but well worthwhile since it is a very nice regen set with a more useful frequency range. You will find the RAK front end selectivity is so great that even at the low end of the broadcast band it will greatly restrict the audio bandpass. You can build a ham band converter to use with this set to make a really nice receiving setup and properly adjusted the RAK (and RAL) sound wonderful for CW.

Enjoy your great Christmas present!

Subject: [Boatanchors] RAK question

Merry Christmas everyone!
My wife got me a nice RAK receiver for Christmas. I haven't messed with these lower frequencies before, so I'm wondering what I can expect to hear below 600 khz, other than the low end of the AM BCB.
The power supply appears to be in good shape, so I'll be hunting the hamfests next summer and searching the ham ads looking for an RAL receiver. Given the weight of these receivers, I'll have to find one in the northern N.J. area because shipping would be prohibitive. The Navy sure liked its receivers heavy!
Thanks for any help you can give me.
                     Joe Connor
