Dave,
An IGBT is an hybrid between a mosfet (small current one used as the IGBT
input) and a power transistor (to handle a high current value).
BUT, this is a trade-off....
The only advantage of the IGBT over a mosfet is that it is easier to drive
and sometimes faster (a hi-power mosfet gate behave as a capacitor, so it is
hard to charge/discharge the gate capacitance).
The drawback is the higher device saturation voltage for a given current
value, compared to a mosfet... And yes, higher device dissipation...
