[Boatanchors] sweep tubes (was Re: Galaxy V)

There probably isn’t a single definitive answer about the Yaesu fan because over the years some distributors included it as a “bonus” and at times Yaesu also advertised deluxe promotional versions with various accessories included as stock items. Later Yaesu would sell multiple variations of the 101 and the higher power 401/560/570 series in different trim levels with higher trim levels providing the fan as standard equipment. In any case it certainly is needed for long tube life.
When I first got my novice ticket the oldest operator in the local club (Mississippi Gulf Coast) was a former radio op on the presidential yacht and was a widower with few obligations and he would buy whatever piece of gear appealed to him. When I first met him he had a Signal One CX7 which was most impressive to a young novice but he soon sold it and bought a FT-101 which he liked far more. Although the CX7 had many features and capabilities not available in the FT-101 he found the Signal One wasn’t very reliable and he was extremely happy with the Yaesu replacement. A few years ago I bought a Signal One CX7 and after completely reworking the power supply it has been very reliable but I am using voltage regulators not available to the original designer back in the early 1970s. The power supply board in the Signal One has multiple regulated positive and negative low voltage supplies for the various solid state parts but the same board also has higher voltage power supply components for the Nixie tube readout along with the high screen and plate voltages required by the conduction cooled 8072 final tube. There was a lot going on with that board along with multiple connections to the various discrete component chassis heat sinked regulators so it isn’t surprising that the original incarnation had some reliability issues but it was a very advanced rig for the time (dual PTOs with dual receive, nixie tube digital display, no tune final, built in keyer, etc.) and is still very fun to operate. I have a FT-101B also but I wouldn’t trade the CX7 for one now ??

Rob,
I didn’t buy it brand new. Came with the fan installed but also with installation instructions so the guy I bought it from may have hooked it up.
Understand that doesn’t really answer your question but someone else may know more.
