[Boatanchors] How Best To Clean Viking II Knobs?

Would like to get the 50 year sweat/grit/grime off the skirts of the 11 knobs on the Viking II without removing the dial numbers.  I'd be most grateful for a good suggestion without me taking a chance on ruining something 8-((.
