I don't know a lot about the 2NT at all, so I guess I can't help much
there.  I am familiar with 6AG7 and 6146 or 807 novice rigs.

Hearing the VFO:  That may be a receiver muting problem more than
anything else.  When you go to transmit the receiver should be
isolated from its antenna feed.  You'll still hear the transmitter but
not the VFO.

HA-5:  They have really gotten expensive.  I found one in less than
mint condx that needed work but it was still over priced.
