For this reason I buy ceramic resistors for my stock for I never know for 
sure where they will be used.  If you find carbon comp, chances are they 
will be out of value but some reliable places have good ones.

Also if you are using them in circuits  500 volts or over pay attention to 
the voltage rating of the resistors.
