Overall, I would say sweep tubes were a great gift to the Ham community.

College friend of mine back in the mid 50’s had a HB 75M rig he operated out of his fraternity house. Clamp tube modulated 6BQ5 (used in B &W sets of the period) in the PA.  
By the time he got the thing running right he had burned a hole in the tube’s plate but the thing still sounded FB!.  He was still operating with the same tube when he graduated 4 years later.
