Chirp could be caused by poor power supply regulation or the VFO being
keyed.  Try a mod. that lets the VFO run all the time when you are in
transmit.

You ought to be able to do fine with 20 watts on CW but I expect band
conditions on 20 m. stink.

I agree that a bit of funky sound, a little drift, some class C choke
input supply ringing on key down etc. let others know you have a real
CW rig and not some modern plastic appliance.

Some ops, OTs maybe are drawn to that sound and a bug for a key.  It
means you aren't some faker with a computer.  The trick is moderation.
You don't want to sound like a Cuban in the 1970s.
