I agree on leaving the vacuum rectifier in place. The only advantage
(if you ask me) of having a sold state rectifier in there is in the
testing phase when you want to bring up the whole thing on a variac
for whatever reason. The vacuum rectifiers don't come up slowly.
They suddenly conduct at some threshold secondary voltage peak. Put
in the silicon for the variac if you want to use it for testing, then
after it's all okay, go back to the vacuum rectifier, unless it's
right up against another part and it's heat will cook it (seen that
sort of poor parts layout before).
