Hi Rob - I can count on one hand the number of our crystals that have ever "blown." 
This out of  thousands sold over the past 18 years. NOBODY using them on AM has ever had a problem.
I have a few CW guys who have tried to use them on rigs that pull 40 - 80 mA of crystal current and THEN they 
are likely to chirp or drift slightly - but only in a few rigs. Most circuits do totally fine with them and that is why 
they enjoy such popularity. Also, most people know when they see a sticker on a crystal case that it has 
been altered in some way. The original crystals always have an engraved plate on the front.
The ancient radio articles always warned of excess crystal current, long before there were any hc49 crystals.
Also, there are certain circuits that will damage any crystal. Including the crazy notion of an 813 power oscillator that some try for unknown reasons.
