Update from Ron,
Well, capacitor across the meter does not dampen the movement, no matter what value I try. It is still a bouncing Betty.
I get about the same results with inductance in series.
Putting a permanent magnet near the meter really affects its response, unfortunately also the meter accuracy!
The best solution is to get a set of dampened meters like the Triplet 327 series. I will keep looking, they are common but hard to find.

Put a .1 or .5 uF capacitor across them, that will dampen them nicely.
