An 8 MHz source like a VFO or a stable signal generator will work fine in
place of a crystal.
There were roughly 8 different models in the Communicator II series. Some
were 6 volt, some were 12 volt, some had one crystal position, some had
four crystal positions, and there were various other minor circuit
changes and additions between the various models. Note that Communicator
II is not the model designation. The model designation was a four digit
number starting with the number 3. If you remove the receiver,
transmitter, and power supply sections to work on the bench, make sure
you have a good ground connection between each chassis if you powered
them up on the bench.
