[Boatanchors] Crystal Eater?

Hi Howie,

There are a few guys like yourself that can make single tube power oscillator XMTRs produce a wonderful clean signal.
Part of the secret seems to be tuning the plate SLIGHTLY to one side of the max. (I forget which way but I believe
it is LF with more capacitance.)

I worked a guy the other day who was using a 6L6 power osc rig and his signal was perfect. This was during the Novice Rig Roundup
so his station was perfect for the occasion! What I don't understand for the life of me is why Mr Ishmael WA6VVL I think,
and anyone else would want to run an 813 power oscillator rig. On the other hand there must be one adventurous ham
every few years somewhere who gets a wild hair and decides to try that, he he!
Have a great day and thanks for the compliment on our crystals.

Hi Bry,I have been using your rebuilt crystals with my AC-1 for years. Never a problem!Tnx Es 73 de Howie WA3Mck

The articles did not go into detail much but the specific crystal cracker circuit but it is

the TRI-TET with the plate operating on the same frequency as the crystal.

There are those who insist on using a huge 813 as a single tube power oscillator with a crystal (why would anyone? Beats me!) I would bet there are two or less hams in the USA trying the odd things suggested in Dave's article.

I stick to transmitters with 2 or 3 tubes at least, and running the crystal oscillator at a sensible power level. Use a sensible "Colpitts" style oscillator or a Pierce, and you don't break the crystals.

Then they don't get destroyed. Most home brewers and all but beginners reading Electric Radio would have already known this though.

But anyway, here is Dave Newkirk's better treatise on the subject:

While looking for that, I ran into this rather cool TX construction project on the web also:
