Sociologically, mankind  evolved with an inborn drive to control territory.  In earlier times and even not that long ago control of physical territory insured access to food 
and mates and was thus necessary for survival.  Dominance of a piece of prehistoric savanna or forrest is no longer required for survival today today but the DRIVE 
is still with us, thus the apparently idiotic claim of ownership of a particular frequency on 160M.  Countless more destructive examples can be found in the world today.
