the modules themselves aren't major expensive, course, I guess that could be relative.
There are broadcast transmitter manufacturers who make solid state AM transmitters at the 1kW and lower operating levels, but I've never used one, so I don't know how they are designed.

Are those RF modules so expensive to preclude their use in Amateur
equipment? The commercial digital AM stuff for Amateur radio seems to have
component problems and using those modules might take care of the problem.
